Marco Ajelli is a Professor at Indiana University, where he leads the CEPH Lab. He completed his undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Information and Communication Technology at the University of Trento, Italy. His research career spans both the European Union and the United States.
Dr. Ajelli’s research focuses on developing quantitative approaches to understand the mechanisms driving infectious disease spread. His interdisciplinary work combines statistical, mathematical, and computational models that integrate biological, socio-economic, and environmental factors. A key component of his research is translating modeling results into tools that support public health decision-making. He has provided situational awareness and strategic support during public health emergencies, serving on task forces for organizations including the WHO, CDC, and the Italian government. He has also established long-term collaborations with mosquito control districts across the United States to support vector surveillance and vector-borne disease management.
Dr. Ajelli has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed papers in leading scientific journals, with significant contributions published in Science, Nature, and PNAS. A complete list of publications is available on Google Scholar. He is a recipient of the Bellman Prize in Mathematical Biosciences and the Aspen Institute Award. His research program has been supported by multiple federal and international agencies, including the NSF, CSTE, and CDC.
